Wright was Rad and Obama's Fired Up!
Jeremiah Wright was at Amherst College Friday night... as was I (along with a bunch of others) and it was rad. Awesome guy. And..the very next AM he was back in Springfied, IL with Obama when he announced he is running. WooHoo!
Ahhhh...the title was: The State of the Dream (MLK commemorative service) Overall, it is too long to really get into (and I did not take notes) but....let me try a very brief synopsis from memory...
The reading was from Jeremiah..."my servant Moses is dead...go into the promised land.. I will not leave you nor forsake you."
Points...ummm: "remember the past, live in the present, look towards the future." Lots of cool stuff said under each of those points. Be honest about the facts -- none of that "My mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts" stuff. Be open to change -- Forget those words, "We have never done it that way before."
Bottom line....way too many things have NOT changed since MLK's days. Need to keep on working for change. MLK was anti-racism but also anti-capitalism and anti-militerism. MLK preached at Riverside Church....said the war in Vietnam was a war on the poor of America b/c it robbed money and resources that could have been used to fight poverty. Substitute the word Iraq for Vietnam and.... well...what has changed?
Well, there's just a couple of thots from the evening.
Located in Western Massachusetts, I am a college instructor and Associate Director of Community Service Learning at UMass Amherst. In addition, I am an artist of the garden and home including: designing, creating, implementing and up-cycling for interior and exterior spaces. My work often includes assemblage with altered, recycled and found objects. For me, the hunt for materials is a huge part of the creative process. I am married and have grown children: a daughter and son-in-law and a son and daughter-in-law. I have two dogs, Chloe and Mia and 2 cats, Arthur and Merci. All of our pets are rescues. The most recent arrival is from an awesome rescue in Tennessee, A Place to Bark - google it!
